Typically organisations go through several stages in transforming themselves.
I have spent much of my career working for global businesses, often in remote subsidiaries. The constant need to make bad choices in the name of short term outcomes or quarterly results wore on me as organisations choose to knowingly sacrifice long term sustainable success. Whilst this may be bad for the organisation it can be devastating for the people. I believe it is possible to balance the short term needs of an organisation, with the longer term sustainable view to make organisations really great for the long run.
I guess I have a bit of a wanderlust having lived and worked almost equal thirds of my life on three different continents. Over 20 years running businesses in different parts of the world has prepared me with a strong understanding of the importance culture plays in the success of a business. Starting out in the printing and publishing industry, working my way through to new media and ending up as a venture capitalist, has shaped my thinking on business transformation and growth. I now spend most of my time helping organisations and their stakeholders with strategies for growth and value creation.
I believe that if a business is not growing and innovating in its industry, then it is dying, even if it does not know it yet. I work with senior leaders to help them transform their business, to execute on their vision and strategy for the future and to sustain that transformational change. Working together to design team engagement, at all levels, brings to bear the power of the organisation and its collective energy.
People make the difference in a business. I help organisations understand that without bringing the people along, change will be fleeting and the culture of the business will not be truly aligned to support the vision. Whilst I tend to be a strategic thinker, I know firsthand that the best strategy has little value if it cannot be effectively executed across the business.
I have built an international career in initiating and growing businesses that address defined market opportunities and build a compelling market proposition. I fundamentally believe and my experience has proved it, that to achieve your business ambitions you must build and maintain high performing teams and support the growth of high performing individuals. I enjoy the opportunity to work with individuals and teams who recognise this critical component and assist them to achieve their goals.
An early career within the advertising industry provided a solid grounding in media and marketing: areas that served me well as I entered the burgeoning world of IT and internet development in the 1990s. During this period I established, and later sold, a successful company that specialised in the development of web enterprise systems. Over the past decade I have worked in a variety of consulting roles and as CEO responsible for the commercialisation of several start-up businesses. These roles have involved developing and putting in place the strategy and direction for each enterprise, including securing multiple rounds of venture capital investment.
My current work is focussed developing people and their capabilities to enhance their ability to contribute to the organisations strategic alignment and direction, particularly in organisations looking to achieve sustainable changes in challenging environments.
My instincts and experience of business more recently in forming start-ups has built a deep appreciation of the conditions required if others are going to join the journey to a shared future. Fundamentally, people want to know how to contribute and be valued. I put the highest importance on growing the values of the organisation. This priority has always been at the forefront of my thinking as I have built a place for people to work and reasons for them to come to it fully present.
